Question: I’ve heard of both a facelift and lower facelift. Are these the same thing?

Answer: The terms facelift and lower facelift are usually synonymous.  Some surgeons use the term lower facelift to differentiate from a mid-facelift, which is a different procedure that is NOT the same as a facelift.  A facelift (or lower facelift) addresses the excess skin along the jawline (jowls) and involves an incision that circles in front of and behind the ear.  A mid-facelift addresses the drooping cheeks and folds below them (nasolabial folds) and is a less common procedure.
