Hate Your Nose? Time to Consider Aesthetic Rhinoplasty

by Dr. Kabaker

It’s hard to avoid your nose. It’s a prominent part of your face. When you hate your nose, it’s stressful to be seen in public without dealing with feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem. Whether your nose is too big, droops too much at the tip, or doesn’t seem symmetrical, a specialist in rhinoplasty can help. You’re definitely not alone; according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, rhinoplasty was the most common cosmetic surgery procedure in 2012.

Even celebrities who top the “most beautiful” lists deal with insecurities. Helen Flanagan, star of the British soap Coronation Street, hated her nose. She’d been teased as a child because of her nose. Despite being on the list of sexiest women in Britain, she’d dreamed of having her nose reshaped to better fit her face. She underwent a nose job in May and loves her new nose. Even less glamorous celebrities such as Howard Stern, have had rhinoplasties, which help their images.

Planning Your New Nose

Schedule a consultation with a rhinoplasty specialist. Check to see if the doctor offers digital imaging. This enables you to compare before and after images to make sure you and your doctor agree on the overall goal.

Remember to trust in the judgment of your doctor. Think of him as an artist. He’ll view your face from different angles, consider the anatomy of your face, and then look at the structure of your nose. He’ll suggest what can be done to make your nose more symmetrical and harmonious with your other facial features, as well as whether you’re a good candidate for open or closed rhinoplasty.

With an open rhinoplasty, the incisions are made on the area of skin between your two nostrils. With a closed rhinoplasty, the doctor is able to make incisions on the inside of your nose.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Doctors need to know your medical history. People who take blood thinners may not be good candidates for rhinoplasty.  People with severe allergies may also not be a good candidate. You should be at least 16 years of age if you are a woman and 18 if you’re a man.

Before your surgery, there are rules you have to follow. You should not take pain killers like aspirin or ibuprofen. Vitamin E intake must be carefully monitored because it can cause issues with the blood’s natural ability to clot. Finally, you should not smoke for at least two weeks prior to your surgery. If you cannot abide by those rules, you need to tell the doctor so that he can decide if rhinoplasty is a good choice for you.
