How common are problems with implants used in rhinoplasty? How often does extrusion or implant shifting occur?
The answer to your question varies with the type of implant used. Some implants are porous and others are solid. According to current literature, infection occurs in 2-3% of patients with porous high-density polyethylene (PHDPE) and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE or Goretex) nasal implants. Extrusion of the implant is less likely after adequate tissue ingrowth into a porous implant, but it is more likely to occur in solid rigid implants. Overall, extrusion seems to occur in anywhere from 1 to 5% of patients. Shifting of the implant is also more likely in solid implants since they do not allow for tissue ingrowth.
