I’m African American, and I generally like my nose but I just wish it were a little less wide.

by Dr. Kabaker

Question: I’m African American and female and I generally like my nose but I just wish it were a little less wide, particularly the nostrils. I’d still like to have a somewhat wider nasal base because I think this would look best on me than if my nose were narrowed too much. Is it possible to slightly narrow the nose?

Answer: People of African descent often have nasal features that include a wider, flatter nasal bridge and wide nostrils. Either or both of these characteristics can be changed to varying extents depending on the patient’s goals. To narrow the nostrils, this involves re-positioning the cartilage in this area. There are various techniques that can be performed to achieve this, but it is important to be evaluated by a plastic surgeon who can determine the specific maneuvers necessary.
