How common is hair thinning after a hair transplant?

Question:
I’ve had two hair transplants. About a year after each one, my hair was showing signs of thinning. How common is this? Is there any way that I can get another, more successful procedure done?

Answer:
Rather than losing transplanted hair, which is typically taken from areas that are programmed to remain for a lifetime, you are likely losing previously existing hair. Donor site hair should remain where it has been transplanted regardless of its location on the scalp. Your preexisting hair, however, will continue to fall based on your genetic predisposition. If you are not currently taking hair sparing medications, you should consider medications such as minoxidil and finasteride which can slow and often stabilize hair loss.
